When AI gets your brand wrong, and what to do

July 23, 2026·5 min read

Here is a new and unsettling problem. You ask ChatGPT about your own company and it gets a fact wrong. An old price, a feature you dropped, a competitor's detail pinned to your name, sometimes a flat invention. It is stated with total confidence, to someone who will never click through to your site to check whether it is true.

This is the quiet cost of answer engines. When the answer arrives without a visit, you lose the chance to correct it on your own page. The fix is not to argue with the chatbot. It is to change what the model reads about you.

Why a model gets you wrong

A model does not hold a tidy database of facts about your business. It assembles an answer from whatever it has: old crawls, thin or contradictory pages, other people's descriptions of you, and, where there is a gap, a plausible-sounding guess. None of that is malice. It is a system filling in blanks.

The blanks are the problem. If your own site never states a fact plainly, the model sources it from somewhere weaker, an outdated directory, a forum post, a competitor's comparison, or it invents something that fits the shape of an answer. The less you say clearly, the more it makes up.

Arguing with the chatbot does nothing

The instinct is to correct it in the chat. You type 'actually, our price is X', it apologises, and you feel better. But that correction does not propagate. The model is not learning from your message, and the next person who asks gets the same wrong answer.

What the model cites tomorrow comes from the web it reads, not from the conversation you had with it. So the fix has to land there, on the pages and sources it pulls from, not in a chat window it forgets the moment it closes.

Fix the source, not the symptom

Make the true fact unmissable where the model actually looks:

  • State it plainly on your own site, in a clear, self-contained sentence a model can lift without surrounding context.
  • Put it in the HTML (the code your page is written in, which search engines and AI read directly), not painted in by JavaScript (code that runs in the visitor's browser after the page loads) a crawler (the automated program that fetches your pages) may never run, or the page a bot fetches is an empty shell.
  • Reinforce it where you are described elsewhere: your profiles, listings, and the coverage that talks about you.
  • Remove or update the stale pages of your own that still state the old version, so you are not contradicting yourself.

Structured data pins the facts down

Plain prose helps a model read you. Structured data, schema and JSON-LD, lets you state machine-readable facts it does not have to interpret: what you are, your name, your offering, your price, in a format built to be unambiguous.

The more consistent that signal is across the web, the less room the model has to drift. A fact stated the same way on your site, your listings and your coverage is one a model can repeat with confidence. A fact that appears three different ways is an invitation to pick the wrong one.

Conflicting signals invite mistakes

Most brand errors trace back to inconsistency. Three pages say three slightly different things about you, and the model picks one, sometimes the worst one. Consistency is not pedantry here, it is the whole defence.

HowFindable scans your site for free and shows you exactly what a crawler reads about you: whether your pages are reachable, whether your facts are in the HTML, whether your structured data is actually there. You get two scores and the specific gaps, and if you want them fixed, we generate the corrected files, ready to upload. You cannot edit the model, but you can fix what it reads.
